BOS Ep 4: Martial Internet Law

“So THIS is how democracy dies. In thunderous applause.”

From WikiPedia: Network Neutrality in the United States is a hotly debated issue subject to regulatory and judicial contention among network users and access providers. As a de facto matter, there is a degree of network neutrality in the United States, meaning that telecommunications companies rarely offer different rates to broadband and dial-up Internet consumers based on Internet-based content or service type. However, there are no clear legal restrictions against these practices. Broadband providers often block common service ports, such as port 25 (SMTP) or port 80 (HTTP), preventing consumers (and botnets) from hosting web and email servers unless they upgrade to a “business” account. In recent years, advocates of network neutrality have sought to restrict such changes.

From EFF: Anyone who watched John Hodgman’s famous Daily Show rant knows what Net Neutrality means as an abstract idea. But what will it mean when it makes the transformation from idealistic principle into real-world regulations? 2010 will be the year we start to find out as the Federal Communications Commission begins a Net Neutrality rulemaking process.

But how far can the FCC be trusted? Historically the FCC has sometimes shown more concern for the demands of corporate lobbyists and “public decency” advocates than it has for individual civil liberties. Consider the FCC’s efforts to protect Americans from “dirty words” in FCC v. Pacifica Foundation or its much-criticized deregulation of the media industry or its narrowly-thwarted attempt to cripple video innovation with the Broadcast Flag.
With the FCC already promising exceptions from net neutrality for copyright-enforcement we fear that the FCC’s idea of an “Open Internet” could prove quite different from what many have been hoping for.

- EFF Net Neutrality statement

- What is net neutrality? What does it mean to me, and what does it mean to you?

- Ever wondered how a packet switching net works? The difference between a packet switch network and your mail system. Very defined routes.

- These are the basic fundamentals of the internet episodes of Steve Gibson and Leo Laporte’s Security Now. This is some of the most beautiful reference material on the subject out there. How the internet works Part 1, TCP / UDP, TCP Part 1 and TCP Part 2.

- What else to we get bundled in with Net Neutrality? All sorts of goodies… Net Neutrality or Internet Censorship? You choose.

- We get it, child porn is gross, but so is using your children as tools to push your political agenda on the rest of society. If I wanted to worry about kids, I would have had my own. It’s a nasty way to get your way in the wide world of politics.

- The Internet is the mode. The people are the problem. These laws are like saying I’m going to ban cars because of all the drunk driving.

- What do you consider legal porn? I’m sure this discussion was going to happen sooner or later.

- Your kids, your responsibility. Common sense stuff right? Now this is what we call a moral opinion.

- If someone has the ability to take your stuff off the Internet, eventually, you will do or say something that will piss someone off, and there it goes.

- How many stupid tv / movie references does Mat make in this episode? Let’s turn this into a game.

- This sounds like a stupid conspiracy, but it could come true. You never know.

- We don’t want to become China. That’s the moral of the story right? Going dark isn’t near as much fun as it sounds.

- This is when things start getting creepy. They just make everything you post online, magically disappear!

- What if… Before you know it they’re watching you through your webcam. How creepy is that?

- How do you turn love to hate? Impeach to love? Keyword alteration. This is not smoke and mirrors shit, this is for real!

- Four episodes in, and already we’re making Star Wars references. I blame Joey for that one. That was all him. So THIS is how democracy dies. In thunderous applause.

- You’re trying to alter how people think. That’s no good. That’s religions job.

- The main question is, are you willing to stand up and fight? That depends, how hard are you pushing?

- Some people just ain’t made for this way of life.

- The Internet would still work, it’s just lame now.

- If you don’t like the content on the site, then don’t go there.

- In closing the biggest threats so far are uneducated law makers. No to SOPA, and NO to PIPA. We should all demand a little progress.
